Mr. Nobody

Watching Jaco Van Dormael’s fast paced mind binder is an immense visceral (and intellectual) experience. The film’s conceit riffs on String Theory of the “multiverse” where ones decision at important points in life can actually split the universe - allowing one to live another life with different circumstances and outcomes. The film careens between all the various lives of protagonist Nemo Nobody who, being the last mortal to die in the year 2092, recounts his conflicting memories to an interested reporter. However, even the framing story in this futuristic world is shown to be a construction of a 9 year old child (Nemo at the age of his parent’s divorce). The film maintains its sense of humor and wonder throughout, no matter how complex the layers pile up.
